For Black Music Month in June, we were joined on Queue Points Live by Leah B, host of the weekly music-history podcast In The Mix With Leah B. We had a conversation about music, memory, and the ways Detroit shaped her sonic worldview. Below, we share our conversation in full: Leah tells the story of how she came into podcasting, the artists who marked her childhood, the Detroit institutions that formed her taste, and why 90s TV theme songs mattered as much as the show itself.
Growing up with dreams of becoming a singer, songwriter, or the "female Babyface," her path took her through a communications degree and a determination to break into radio. While that path didn’t pan out right away, a friend introduced her to the idea of podcasting, and the wheels began turning. The true catalyst, though, was the loss of her brother in 2019, her “muse” and loving supporter. His memory gave Leah fresh purpose, inspiring her to launch In The Mix with Leah B just before the pandemic.
What shines through is a shared commitment to the preservation and celebration of Black music history.
